The 1937 Club!

It’s April, which means it must be time for one of Kaggsy and Simon’s twice annual ‘reading ‘year’ clubs. This time round the year is 1937 so to join in you just have to read a book published in that year and share thoughts about them wherever you have a platform – on a blog, Goodreads, Instagram or even in the comments of either of Kaggsy and Simon’s blogs. It’s a relaxed event, where you can read as many or as few books as you like.

I’ve been looking at lots of lists and doing some planning and spurred on my a post I spotted on Hopewell’s Library of Life I thought I would look at what I have read from 1937 and what I could read for the challenge.

what i’ve read:

Most of these were read pre-blog so where I can’t link to reviews of them I’ve linked to their Goodreads description.

Out of Africa by Karen Blixen/ Isak Dinesen

Of Mice and Men by John Steinback

The Doll and Other Stories by Daphne Du Maurier

The Adventures of the Wishing Chair by Enid Blyton 🙂

my reading options:

After a look through the 746 and my groaning shelves, I have the following possibilities.

Theatre by W. Somerset Maugham

I’m a sucker for books set in the theatre and have never read Maugham so think this one is a definite. Given that Maugham was also a playwright and theatrical producer, this should be on the money.

They Came Like Swallows by William Maxwell

I loved So Long, See You Tomorrow by Maxwell but had this one lined up for my 20 Books of Summer pile this year, so I may well leave it until then.

Hamlet, Revenge! by Michael Innes

Another theatre set book – this time a crime novel set amidst a production of Hamlet. Sounds right up my street!

Famine by Liam O’Flaherty

This had been on my possible list for Reading Ireland Month but I didn’t get to it. I’m not sure if it’s a runner because the idea of reading a 400 page + novel about the Irish potato famine in the next week isn’t very appealing!

Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie

I’ve seen the movie countless times, along with the recent remake, so the mystery isn’t going to be too mysterious, but am still quite tempted to give this one a go. You can always count on Christie to have a book for any of the ‘year’ clubs!

The Road to Wigan Pier by George Orwell

I’m not sure if this one counts as I have seen it listed on some of the 1937 lists yet Goodreads says it was published in 1936? I had planned to join in with Brona’s Reading Orwell 2024 so this would be a good ‘two challenges with one book’ read!

Are you taking part in the 1937 Club? What have you got lined up?
